About the Project

Like a kaleidoscope, the Andaz hotel reflects the culture and tradition of the neighbourhood, creating a stimulating and inspiring atmosphere where guests and locals can feel at home. The combination of state-of-the-art technology and old traditions that makes Munich so unique forms a sense of tension that can be found throughout the hotel design. The ceiling structure illustrates this contrast via a literally interwoven network of rough wood and high-gloss anodised metal. The connecting axis between the different areas, which brings all functions together in a single hybrid space ('we share') is a lively place to meet and mingle.

What makes the hotel unique is the design of curated space, all with its own identity. The Skybar ‘M’Uniqo’ for example is the perfect spot to enjoy the sunset while being rewarded with a panoramic view over Munich. Centred around an iconic bottle rack, the five-metre high bar has a core covered in back-lit shelves, with hundreds of bottles reflected in the mirror ceiling into infinity.

In contrast to this vibrant place, the spa is rather introverted and relaxing. The human body has no sharp angles, and this leading theme inspired the round shapes of the spaces in the spa. As they flow organically into each other, guests are intuitively guided to the different areas, while natural materials radiate an elegant calm.

What’s unique about it

Concrete designs hospitality-driven spaces with a holistic view towards the scope, program, location and target group. One of the biggest challenges designing the hotel was whether the neighbourhood would embrace the concept, therefore capturing the soul of Munich was important. With a maximum eye for detail, craftsmanship and natural materials which are in perfect harmony and seamlessly connects the fluent spaces with each other. Every area has its own function and surprises: eat, sleep, work, celebrate and relax. Andaz Munich is more than just a hotel: the diversity reflects the modern lifestyle. Instead of conventional walls that separate the room, two frames of raw steel divide it into a bathroom, bedroom and living area to create a contemporary en-suite, inspired by the modern loft. Light and (video) art play an essential role in the various programs and make the hotel playful and accessible. Traditional materials are given a modern interpretation by contemporary design language. The open and inviting character of all areas strengthens the open spirit. The aspect of sustainability is accomplished in many aspects, energy-saving technology, LED lighting, renewable natural materials and the craftsmanship of the (custom-made) furniture, which ensures long life.
