About the Project

Tala Studios is the new global headquarters of British lighting brand, Tala. Located in East London overlooking the picturesque Regents Canal, Tala Studios spans two floors of a former textile warehouse recently renovated by Archer Architects.

As a refurbishment project, the building is inherently sustainable. With a refined and minimalist material and colour palette - including exposed brick walls, large crittall-style windows, reclaimed pinewood floors and original steel columns - that pay homage to the building’s industrial heritage, the space embodies Tala’s founding promise of Conservation Through Beauty.

The fit-out was led by Tala’s in-house design team whose brief was to design a multi-functional space with collaboration and wellness at its core. The layout is divided between the varying working styles of the departments, with a focus on nexus points between teams and flexible layouts for events and workshops. With an office, showroom, design studio, communal kitchen and engineering lab to boot, the design intent was to create both an enriching environment for Tala’s 50 London-based employees and a destination showroom for the design community.

At the heart of the space is a premium kitchen and communal dining area which is bordered by the materials library and engineering lab - an illustration of importance placed on nurturing cross pollination between departments and celebrate transparency.

What’s unique about it

The interior design of Tala Studios was managed in-house by Tala’s design team, a major feat for a young team who are product designers by trade.

The space is future-proofed with a flexible layout that can evolve with the company’s growth. The design carefully balances a functioning office with client-facing zones including the kitchen, showroom, balcony terrace and retail lounge.

A considered colour and material palette and the abundance of natural light make for a tranquil working environment. The generous quantity of break out space, including the large-scale balcony terrace, prioritises wellbeing and encourages creativity and dialogue between departments.

An innovative feature of the design is the state-of-the-art engineering and material lab which enables Tala to carry out research and testing in-house for the first time. Self-watering hydroponic ceiling planters, manufactured in-house, have been installed throughout the building to help with air purification as well as add a subtle touch of colour to the space.

In line with Tala’s founding promise of Conservation Through Beauty, Tala Studios boasts a range of initiatives to help reduce the company’s carbon footprint. The office celebrates Meat Free Mondays and upholds a vegetarian policy when it comes to catering events in the space. Zero waste is sent to landfill and all electricity is provided by renewable energy supplier, Bulb.
