About the Project

In practice, the assignment for RoarcRenew is to design a shared living-room under a 10-m high ceiling inside a female-themed shopping mall. The edge of the original floor is “softened” and the edge facade forms a "welcoming" curve. It provides a place for "seeing" the "butterfly" space. The new elliptical staircase connecting the vertical traffic of 4th and 5th floors provides an important channel and a main visual image for the whole field. In this "butterfly", we used 44 steel pipe arch rings to curve a series of multiple arches in accordance with the original floor shape, and constructed the original vertical structure of the site -- the clock tower outward central array. We spent half a year trying to study the necessity of putting the membrane structure into the indoor space, construction, building order, joint connection, lighting coordination, structural load, etc. As a result, we are excited to see that the soft "skin feeling" derived from "membrane" materials forms a special media carrier. This is complemented by our desire to express the "charm of butterflies" of “women”. "Membrane" functions as a good thermal insulation and it is the regulator of indoor microclimate. After the design, the art zone is equipped with a gallery, indoor children’s castle, parent-child library, and a small stage and an auditorium, all of which will grant the Joy City a sense of community center and an enjoyable space.

What’s unique about it

The space shaping to an actually limited structure can be challenging but also showcased how powerful a design can be. There are 2 challenges in structure: - The interlayer floor slab can only support light-weight structure and furniture. - The bell tower in the space can not be dismantled. By using tensile membranes, we could make continuous arches with steel skeletons. With ingenuity, the designer transformed the adverse factor of the space structure to an inspirational space feeling. We made innovations at macro indoor climate control with the art zone. The tensile membranes act like a climate protection shield that blocks direct sunshine between the curtain wall glass and the interior space. The curvature of the membranes can also serve as a thermal insulation, helping more warm air to stay closer to the ground. The tensile membranes deliver a skin-like feeling, and the warm and cold color shift is yet another exploration into environmental perception and color psychology. The project is a female-themed space in a commercial complex, now it works like a living room of the complex for the visitors to rest and enjoy. The art zone is equipped with a gallery, indoor children’s castle, parent-child library, and a small stage and an auditorium, all of which will grant the Joy City a sense of community center and an enjoyable space,it’s a successful attempt at combining the community life and idle business space.
