About the Project

Designed by Space Copenhagen, 108 is a restaurant in Nyhavn, Copenhagen, for René Redzepi who has teamed up with former Noma chef Kristian Baumann. Still refined and complex, yet more casual and affordable than Noma, 108 serves food close to nature and local agriculture, based on a seasonal approach. The restaurant seats around 80 guests and includes a small bar serving coffee and wine.

Throughout the project Space Copenhagen worked with an interplay of two elements - the building itself, as well as their fascination with the surrounding area of Christianshavn and the use of intense and vibrant colours in this iconic district of the city. Small touches of colour - that reflect the surrounding area, home to Copenhagen’s prized pastel façades – are used throughout the restaurant.

Boasting characteristic Scandinavian style, the restaurant features bespoke furniture pieces by Space Copenhagen, manufactured by Stellar Works and Mater, and utilises existing structural elements of the space. Relying heavily on raw materials such as wood, concrete and metal, the project maintains the beauty of the building itself - a former industrial warehouse. In addition, wardrobes in blackened steel and stretch metal as well as wood credenzas serve as waiting stations throughout the restaurant and long oak benches and a communal table. To highlight the restaurants high ceiling, Space Copenhagen chose mouth-blown pendants by BOMMA.

What’s unique about it

108 features bespoke furniture and lighting pieces that have been designed to compliment the strong structural elements of the tall space, as well as reframe the existing beautiful material palette of concrete, bricks and dark metals.

The project maintains as much as possible the original characteristics of the former warehouse, honouring the unique architectural structures of the building and seamlessly blending the interior and exterior architecture. Long-lasting design that will stand the test of time – materials such as wood were chosen for the furniture pieces for their timeless qualities and the beautiful ageing process.

The restaurant was designed to feel casual and relaxed. One particular design decision was to create an intimate layout of the seating arrangements - bringing diners closer together and allowing them to easily interact with neighbours. In addition, instead of dining chairs, Space Copenhagen chose to use benches without backrests to enhance the casual feel of the experience.

Colours chosen at the beginning of the project - mint green and midnight blue - offer subtle references to the surrounding area and the nature and sea. To compliment, Space Copenhagen chose red, recognised as ‘the colour of Copenhagen’ with the facades, bricks and roofs. Elements of the design, such as the blackened steel wardrobes and wood credenzas that servers use as waiting stations are both functional and aesthetic.
