About the Project

The Oostlijn runs from Central Station to Amsterdam Zuid-Oost, partially underground and partially elevated. GROUP A is responsible for the design of the renovation of the 16 original stations. The Oostlijn is a unique example of brutalism in public Dutch architecture. Over the years, its original spatial concept lost strength, it no longer was well equipped to face future changes. Starting point for the design is the creation of contemporary well organized metro stations serving passengers offering
a safe and pleasant space while creating a strong identity.

Revealing the original DNA of Metro Oostlijn creates a solid base for new interventions such as contemporary media and ticket clusters. Specific spatial interventions provide daylight and overview within the original stations and between the street and the metro interior. Scattered elements have all been clustered and integrated into the architecture to create and understandable space. Passenger flow and the feeling of social safety have been significantly improved.

The Metro’s public character is strengthened by the addition of carefully designed commercial spaces and station furniture. New contrasting materials have been applied in contrast to the unpolished character of its spaces. Calm use of colour enhances large visual tableaus serving as guiding elements. These nuances in materialization make a difference and enhance the original character of the Metro spaces.

What’s unique about it

With the majority of people living in cities, their mobility relies not only on creating efficient transport but creating spaces of integral value for the city. The metro system is a social space deserving high levels of attraction.

The beautiful in the renovation of the Oostlijn is a spatial package consisting of prolific use of its original DNA, enhanced through daylight insertion and an integral design strategy for wayfinding, art, services and commercial spaces. All 'cluttering' elements are brought together and integrated into innovative clusters, providing clarity. The stations feel lighter and there is an overview that makes it easier to find the way and that social security has increased. This clear strategy for the layout of the stations creates consistency and makes the stations sustainable. A good basis for the next 30 years.

Recognizing their quality and addressing their issues the renovation of previous centuries' metro lines is an acute and important task. Through considerate spatial interventions like voids and added transparency as well as the addition of rich materials, the appreciation for the Metro Oostlijn is greatly enhanced. Attractive public transport serves the city in many good ways. The human component in the renovation of the Oostlijn is a story of attention to scale, usability and interaction. Through the creation of characterful places from spaces of transfer the existing Metro re-emerges and its value for the city is unveiled.
