About the Project

We proposed the spirit of ‘法古創新(Beop go chang shin)’ as a key aesthetic of the brand ‘Donginbi’, which aims to maintain the history of traditional red ginseng and create modern beauty. ‘法古創新(Beop go chang shin)’ is the Korean spirit that means “Create the new while do not contradict the spirit of the classics.” In accordance with the spirit of the brand, the space was designed based on the value of traditional Korean-style houses. We tried to reinterpret the aesthetics of traditional Korean-style houses from a contemporary view point through our project. We decided to borrow the architectural elements of traditional Korean-style houses. The space was designed by using the Korean traditional wood joinery techniques and the method of borrowing landscape into the space. The most important element is the wood joinery techniques which were made by traditional Korean carpenters. The wood joinery is the combination of architectural components. The traditional wood joinery is invisible technique, but it forms structures by itself. We tried to make symbol and spatial value of ‘DONGINBI’ by reinterpreting the traditional wood joinery techniques into contemporary view point. The wood joinery technique in traditional Korean-style houses is combination of wood. However rather combining wood, by combining disparate materials such as metal, stone, we expressed contemporary images.

What’s unique about it

SPA1899 is a spa salon made by ‘DONGINBI COSMETIC` that pursues the value of the beauty of Korean traditional red ginseng. We focused on the core value of the brand and the space was designed to make customers to fully concentrate on the spa experience, by removing unnecessary environmental elements. The core of this design is that it is reinterpreted contemporary based on tradition. This is matched with the core value of the brand. And it makes us to think about new direction that should be tried, in design to keep and develop tradition. We tried to avoid the one-dimensional use of patterns and materials of traditional Korean-style houses. We concentrated on extracting the structural elements of traditional Korean-style houses which could be applied to our project and reinterpreting the elements to be matched with the cosmetic brand. `The traditional joinery techniques in Korea` is a key element of the design. While the conventional method of joinery technique is combinations of wood, we created contemporary images by combining disparate materials such as stone, metal and acrylic. In addition, for making symbolic image of the brand, the gradation-colored metal is used as symbolic image of the Korean traditional red ginseng which is a core asset of the brand, reminding brand `DONGINBI` to customer, naturally in the space.
